To get around Stockholm County with ease, just use the official SL-Journey Planner app alongside Google Maps or the Apple Maps mobile app to locate public transport stops.

Getting around with SL
1. Open google or apple maps.

3. Find the public transport stop closest to your destination.
4. Open the SL app and search a journey using the stops you are travelling between.
5. Choose the journey that suits you the best.
6. You are provided travel instructions and an interactive map with your specific travel route.
7. Enjoy the ride and hop off at your destination stop.
Modes of Transportation
A wide variety of vehicles run within the SL system. They are easy to spot. Just look for the distinct SL branding and logo on the outside.

T-Centralen & Stockholm City
T-Centralen and Stockholm City form Stockholm's main SL hub. Conveniently connected and located right at the Central Station, this area is the perfect starting point for exploring the city. All SL subway and commuter trains run underground, while buses and the tram can be caught at street level.
Slussen
Slussen sits just south of Stockholm’s medieval center. Even though it is an active construction site, this busy hub makes it easy to transition between the subway, local buses, and scenic ferry lines. If you’re planning a trip to Stockholm’s gorgeous archipelago, chances are you’ll pass right through here.
Odenplan
Odenplan is a lively, triangular plaza located in a bustling part of Stockholm. Both the commuter rail and the subway run directly beneath the square, making it an incredibly easy stop on your journey. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while admiring the beautiful Gustav Vasa Church.
5 Tips for a smooth SL Journey
Vehicle doors
You may need to press a button to open the door on a transit vehicle. This applies to all modes of transport.
Bus boarding
When taking the bus, you should generally board through the front door. The middle and back doors are normally only used for boarding if you have a stroller or a wheelchair. However, on inner-city lines 1–4 and 6, you are allowed to enter all doors. Exit through any door.
Keep Right on the Escalator
In Stockholm, the right side of the escalator is for standing, the left is for people in a hurry. Whether you're alone or in a group, always stand to the right so others can pass.
Transfer
When transferring between vehicles, the SL app will always provide the specific track number, bus stop or boat stop to make your journey as easy as possible.
Sometimes you must walk to a nearby stop, in this case the built in SL map & physical signs will show you where you should go.
If you miss a transfer, simply use the SL app to search a new journey from your current location.
Boarding
Before hopping on, just double-check that the destination sign on your ride matches the one listed in the SL app to avoid taking a line in the wrong direction.

Before exploring Stockholm and the surrounding region, you’ll need a valid ticket.
Getting Your Ticket
SL app
Having a digital SL ticket in your phone is the quickest way for you to get started exploring. When you purchase a mobile ticket, you receive a QR code that can be activated at any time within 60 days of the purchase.
The SL app lets you choose between a personal ticket or a group ticket, depending on your needs.

The Staffed Fare Gate
All stations with fare gates are equipped with a staffed service booth, where you can buy tickets, scan group tickets, and receive travel assistance.
SL Customer Service Center
SL Customer Service Centers are located near Stockholm Central Station and are especially helpful for travelers arriving from the airport. Here you can get help, buy SL tickets, and find information about how to travel within the SL public transport network.
Pressbyrån
SL tickets are also available for purchase at Pressbyrån, a small convenience store commonly located near transit hubs.

Group ticket
A group ticket enables multiple individual tickets with the same validity period to be combined, providing a convenient solution for travelers in larger groups.
To pass through fare gates using a group ticket, please scan it at the staffed gate. Be aware that wait times at staffed gates may be slightly longer than at regular fare gates.
For the quickest access through fare gates, individual tickets are recommended.
Special tickets
You can get a combined ticket that lets you travel freely across both Stockholm County and Uppsala County on a single ticket.
Combined tickets with a validity time of 24 hours or longer are only available at an SL customer service center.
Where do I scan my SL ticket?
To ride an SL vehicle, you are required to scan your ticket if it is possible. The procedure may vary depending on the mode of transport.
Subway trains
Scan your ticket at the fare gates before proceeding to the platform area.
SL buses
Use the on-board scanners located inside by the bus doors.
On bus lines 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6, passengers may board and scan tickets at any door. On all other lines, boarding is through the front door only.
Trams
For tram services, ticket scanners may be located either on the platform or inside the vehicle. If no scanner is available, a staff member will typically check or scan your ticket manually.
SL Commuter trains
Scan your ticket at the fare gates before continuing to the platform area. At some stations, ticket validation takes place on the platform, using scanners located outside the train.
SL Commuter boats
Ticket scanners are available onboard the vessel, usually near the boarding area. On some routes, an SL staff member may also check or scan your ticket manually.
Keep in mind
You may complete your journey with an expired ticket, provided it was valid at the time of boarding or when scanned at a fare gate.
Getting to Stockholm
Getting to Stockholm is simple and can take as little as 18 minutes from Arlanda, Sweden’s largest international airport. Arriving in Stockholm by rail or coach bus is also an option. Frequent routes run directly into the city center from both domestic cities and international destinations.
Airport to City
Arlanda Express
This airport express train offers you frequency and speed. It gets you to central Stockholm in only 18 min while departing every 12 min in rush-hour. It serves two of the three airport stations: Arlanda Norra (Arlanda North) & Arlanda Södra (Arlanda South).
This service runs all the time except late at night between around 00:30 to 05:00.
Arlanda Express offers you free travel between Airport stations, it is however a really expensive option for travel to central Stockholm. But if budget isn’t a concern and you value speed as well as convenience, this might be the best option for you. Tickets are available at Omio, more info further down.
SL
SL commuter trains depart every 30 minutes right from Arlanda Central station. Any southbound train goes straight to Stockholm City, a section of the city's main transit hub, where you can easily continue by subway or other transport.

Airport Station Fee
Arlanda Central Station is owned by a private company, as a result they charge a fee from any adult who is leaving or entering the train station. This fee is almost four times the price of the ticket which can be a lot for some, it is however more affordable than Arlanda express.
Märsta
Do you want the benefit of arriving straight into the center of Stockholms by train while avoiding extra fees? there is another option for you!
By taking an SL commuter train from Märsta instead of Arlanda central this is possible. Märsta is a small town right next to the airport where SL trains depart towards Stockholm every 15-30 min. It is by far the most affordable option.
You can easily get to Märsta station from the airport using SL buses, which run very frequently and take a little over 10 min.

It's worth knowing that SL does not run their commuter trains late at night from about 01:00 to 05:00. During these hours, SL provides a direct bus service between Arlanda Airport and central Stockholm.

Airport Shuttle Buses
Shuttle buses offer a convenient and direct connection to Stockholm while being more affordable than any direct rail service from the airport. The primary bus operators on this route are Vy and Flixbus. Tickets are available on Omio; more info can be found further down.
Unlike trains that take you straight to the Central Station with only a few or no stops in between, shuttle buses offer more flexibility by running several lines into Stockholm while making multiple stops along the way, mainly inside the city.
Depending on where you are going in the city, shuttle buses can therefore be even faster than the train, since they could spare you a transfer at the Central Station.

Regional & Intercity Trains
If you want to reach Stockholm quickly but think Arlanda express is little bit too expensive, the regional train service might be exactly what you need. Regional and Intercity trains can get you from Arlanda to Stockholm Central Station in only 18-20 min.
The two main companies providing this service are Mälartåg and the national rail company SJ, which shouldn't be confused with SL.
I prefer Mälartåg because they run more modern trains and let you sit wherever you want. Trains do not run at night between 01:00 and 05:00, if you need to travel during these hours, I suggest shuttle buses or SL buses.
If you purchace train tickets in Omio, the fee for passing through Arlanda Central Station is already included in the price. No need to pay anything extra! More info further down.
Arriving from elsewhere
You can reach Stockholm by coach bus, long-distance train, or even international night trains from countries like Germany. When planning your trip to Stockholm, keep in mind that the bus terminal is called Cityterminalen while the train station is Stockholm Central. They are part of the same physical hub, but you’ll want to search for the right name depending on how you choose to travel. Tickets are available at Omio.
What is Omio?
Omio is a service that lets you purchase tickets from all the well known bus and train companies like SJ, Mälartåg, Flixbus, Vy, VR and more without needing 5 different websites or applications.
It is an ideal tool for intercity and long distance travel within Sweden.
Be aware that unlike local public transport, prices tend to go up quite a lot if you buy tickets close to the departure date, so I strongly recommend getting them in advance.
If you're logged in, tickets purchased in a browser will automatically appear in the mobile app. If you prefer not to log in, they'll be sent straight to your email.

Top Attractions
A mix of popular attractions in the capital of Sweden.
Djurgården Island
Skansen
Part open-air zoo, part living history museum, Skansen is pure Swedish charm. Walk through authentic buildings from the 1700s, spot Nordic wildlife like moose and bears, and take in stunning panoramic views of Stockholm.
Keep in mind that the Aquarium is located inside the park and requires its own ticket. It is basically a small zoo inside of a zoo. To get in, you will need both a general admission ticket for Skansen and a separate ticket for the Aquarium. Skansen is incredibly family-friendly and easy to reach by bus or tram.

Gröna Lund
Want to ride a giant swing that sits higher than any church spire in Sweden? Head to Gröna Lund. It is an incredibly compact park, packing over thirty attractions into a space you can walk across in just two minutes. But don't let the size fool you, because the roller coasters here are serious.
It is home to Monster, which blasts you through the air at ninety kilometers per hour, and Insane, where your seat spins like a fidget spinner while moving aggressively along a curved track. Then there is Ikaros, which takes you high above Stockholm for an amazing view, right before tilting you completely face-first toward the ground for a massive drop.
In the evening, the whole place lights up with a cozy, nostalgic energy. Beyond the rides, the park is famous for its live summer concerts, classic carnival games, and plenty of great food spots.
This was the very first theme park I visited as a kid, and it’s still an absolute favorite. If you love amusement parks, don't miss it.

ABBA Museum
At the ABBA museum you get to dive into the life and experiences of the band ABBA. You'll see their original costumes, instruments, and gold records. This place is full of pure nostalgia. And if you like showing off your dancing skills, you can even get on stage and dance with life-size holograms of the band!

Gamla Stan
Gamla Stan is a medieval island located in the core of Stockholm. Here you can visit the Royal Palace, the workplace of the Swedish King. It is no ordinary palace, it's one of Europe's largest, with over 600 rooms! To put that in perspective, my old elementary school had about 200 kids, and I thought that was a crowd. Imagine if kids ran off in this place, will they ever be found again?
If you time it right, you can catch the Changing of the Guards, a traditional ceremony where new guards take over duties from the old ones, often with a marching band, music and lots of impressive precision. A free show!

Ocean Bus
Have you ever been on a bus that can move on water without sinking? If not, then Ocean Bus might be the experience for you! During the ride you are taken on a guided tour around the historic streets of Stockholm, passing iconic landmarks like the Royal Palace, before plunging straight into the Baltic Sea to continue the adventure on the water.

Södertälje is a town in the southern region of Stockholm County, mostly known for being the headquarters of the famous truck manufacturer Scania. Despite being quite industrialized, there are some great activities here.
Tom Tits Experiment
This place is an exciting maze of over 400 interactive science experiments and a wide range of activities spread across four massive floors. You can lose yourself in a mind-bending mirror maze, scream your way down the massive indoor slides, or head out to the park to brave the 15-meter outdoor drop tower.
I was here on an elementary school trip once and one of my strongest memories is an incredibly tight concrete pipe that you could crawl through in the pitch black. It's the ultimate childhood thriller that has every kid thinking, “If someone gets stuck in front of me, how in the world am I getting out?” It turns out it is actually a clever experiment designed to test your ability to navigate a low-light, confined space using your touch and hearing.
On one of the upper floors, you can strap yourself into the Space Ball, a multi-axis gyroscope that rotates you in every direction at once. It mimics real astronaut training for dealing with unpredictable spins, letting you test your stomach and see how you handle a taste of zero-gravity balance.
Anyone can have a blast here, whether you're a kid, a teen, or an adult wanting to unleash your inner child.

This spot pairs a gym with an indoor pool facility, only an 11-minute walk from the commuter train station. You can hit the waterslide and wave pool, or just unwind in the hot tub and sauna. When you get hungry, the cafe serves up hot dogs, pancakes, snacks, and a variety of drinks.

Bodyflight Stockholm
Experience the rush of a freefall without ever stepping foot out of a plane. Right underneath the big football stadium (formerly known as Tele2 Arena), is a massive indoor entertainment center that brings food, drinks, and games together under one roof.

You’ll also find plenty of shuffleboard, darts, and billiards, and a wide selection of casual restaurants serving up family favorites like burgers, pizza, and milkshakes.

Golfbaren Kristineberg
This is a mini golf course tucked into a beautiful, leafy park area that also contains an 18th-century manor estate. The core of the experience is an outdoor 18-hole minigolf course that offers a fun, casual challenge for visitors in groups.
Also available on site is a summer bistro serving up much more than your standard park snacks. The menu is packed with crowd-pleasers like signature smashed burgers, pizzas, fresh salads, and plenty of ice cream.

Movie Theater
Do you want to relax after your adventures? A movie could be a cosy way to end the day.
Stockholm often reminds me of the first time I ever sat in a movie theater. I must have been around nine in downtown Stockholm, I went to see "Cloudy with a chance of meatballs". I was so blown away in the best way possible, especially since we didn't have an HD TV at home at the time. I still remember that feeling.
Movie Languages
In Sweden, movies are almost always shown in their original language, with the exception of children’s films. This means most movies feature English speech. So grab some popcorn, settle into your seat, and enjoy the cinema experience! Here are a few wonderful spots to check out:

You can book your tickets through Filmstaden. Their website is in Swedish, so a browser translation feature might be helpful. When I tried it, everything translated perfectly. If you have trouble with the translation or prefer to buy your tickets in person, you can always purchase them directly at the movie theater. National Parks
The Royal National City Park
The Royal National City Park is a diverse green belt running on the eastern side of Stockholm. Here you will experience a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Discover unique ecosystems containing ancient oak forests, flowers, lakes, even a hundred different bird species. Have a picnic on the open meadows or simply enjoy the abundance of water views.
You can get here by bus, subway, tram, or boat, depending on where you're coming from. To keep it simple, I suggest taking the urban tram (Line 7) to its very last stop, "Waldemarsudde," and entering the nature area right from there.

Tyresta National Park
Tyresta National Park contains one of the largest untouched primeval forests in the southern half of Sweden. Here you can explore 55 km of trails through ancient pine and spruce woodlands. This 1,964-hectare ecosystem is also the home of up to 8000 animal species, including deer, moose, foxes, wild boar, hares and a wide variety of birds and insects. Getting here by public transport involves a train and a bus. Just be aware that the bus only runs once an hour, so keep that in mind when planning your visit!

City Parks
Kungsträdgården
Kungsträdgården, or “The King’s Garden,” is one of Stockholm’s most vibrant and visited parks. Originally a 15th-century kitchen garden for the royal palace, it later evolved into a grand royal baroque garden before transforming into the casual but lively public space we see today. During the summer, this urban park comes alive with outdoor concerts, cultural festivals, and bustling open-air cafés. The park is surrounded by stunning historical architecture, and its southern edge opens right up to the water where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. It’s also loaded with fantastic food, drink, and ice cream options, making it a perfect pit stop on your city stroll.
Just a short walk from the park lies Nybroplan. From here, SL commuter boats offer a breathtaking ride through the heart of Stockholm, gliding past historic buildings and city islands. These boats offer not just transportation, but an unforgettable experience, taking you to beloved spots like Gröna Lund and Skansen. It’s one of my favorite ways to experience Stockholm, scenic, relaxing, and truly unforgettable.

Humlegården
Humlegården or “The Hop Garden” was originally a royal garden made to cultivate plants used for brewing beer. Today this public park is made up of green hills, a cozy network of gravel paths surrounded by majestic oak trees. This is a magnificent place for those who value high quality park environments that also feel spacious and peaceful.
The park is home to the Royal Library, which opened to the public in 1878. Come here to discover the history behind Swedish gaming culture, take a look at ancient medieval letters or old magazines and newsletters. If you get hungry while you’re here, you can grab a bite or a coffee at the restaurant or café inside the library building.

Djurgårdsbrunnskanalen
This scenic fishing place is located by a canal inside the Royal National City Park. Here you have convenient access to a charming kiosk, a restaurant and a public toilet.

Nacka Strand
At Nacka Strand you are able to fish next to one of Stockholms largest waterways. Cast your line while boats and ferries cruise by in the distance. If you accidentally hook a pedestrian by mistake, no big deal, there’s a medical clinic just around the corner.
While you're here, you also have access to a local supermarket, a pizza place, and several other restaurants.
To get here, I recommend taking SL ferry 80 or 80X from Nybroplan to Nacka Strand. Both offer beautiful rides through the city’s waterways, line 80X takes around 25 minutes, while line 80 does a slightly longer route taking about 40 minutes. Either way, you get to experience an amazing boat ride.

Haga Slottsgrund
Located in a beautiful nature area right next to the home of the Swedish Crown Princess family, you’ll find this unexpected piece of history. Haga Slottsgrund consists of the ruins of a grand palace commissioned by King Gustav III, though construction never progressed past the basement level. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even walk along the top of the massive stone foundations.
The surrounding landscape, which is a section of the Royal National Park, is beautiful to explore. Just a short walk from the ruins, you can head down to the water to relax, enjoy some snacks, and simply take in the peaceful scenery.

Skinnarviksberget
As the highest natural point in central Stockholm, standing 53 meters above sea level, this rocky hill offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding waterways and historic rooftops.
It is a favorite gathering spot right within the city, especially during the warmer months. You can easily bring along a blanket and some snacks to sit directly on the smooth granite rocks and watch a beautiful sunset over the water.

Björnö Nature Reserve
Björnö nature reserve is a beatuful coastal haven known for its diverse and dramatic landscapes. The area perfectly captures the essence of the Swedish archipelago, combining dense pine forests and open pastures with rugged granite cliffs that look out over the sea.
It is a fantastic destination for outdoor activities and relaxation alike. Visitors can explore a network of scenic walking trails, relax on sandy beaches, or jump into the water from the smooth rocks. The reserve also features an underwater snorkeling trail, well-maintained viewing platforms, and quiet spots where you can set up a picnic and enjoy the peaceful coastal views.

Tantolunden
Located on the southwestern side of Södermalm, Tantolunden is one of Stockholm’s most diverse parks, built across a varied landscape of rocky hills, rolling grassy lawns, and leafy walking paths that stretch along the waterfront of Årstaviken.
The park is especially famous for its hundreds of charming, historic allotment gardens with colorful wooden cottages climbing up the hillsides. It is a fantastic destination for all kinds of activities, featuring a sandy beach for swimming, open areas perfect for picnics, and recreational facilities like a beach volleyball court and a frisbee golf course.
Right next to the park, you can walk across the water on a dedicated pedestrian and cycling path along the side of the new Årsta railway bridge. It is a tall, impressive crossing that offers fantastic views over the water and back toward the park hills.

Duvbo Park
A small suburban neighborhood park near Lötsjön lake that offers a peaceful green escape nestled within a historic residential area. The park features quiet shaded areas, open grassy lawns, and a popular playground, making it a lovely spot for families and locals to relax.
If you take a walk beyond the park, you will immediately find yourself strolling through charming streets lined with beautifully preserved wooden villas. Nearby you have Lötsjön lake, with a cozy lakeside café where you can stop for a coffee.

Drottninggatan
The Street
Drottninggatan is the most popular pedestrianized shopping street in Stockholm. Along the way, you'll find a mix of small shops, cafes, restaurants, with multiple well-known squares along the corridor.
1. If you'd like to walk this entire street, I recommend first taking the commuter train or subway to Odenplan.
2. Use the station signs to find the exit towards Odenplan, and leave through that entrance.
3. Walk towards the ugly grey building at the eastern end of Odenplan Square, then turn right onto the street in front of that building.
4. Follow that street until you have a park on your left side. Continue towards the yellow building with an orange roof.
5. There, two lions will welcome you onto the famous straight section of Drottninggatan which takes you through the downtown and past many small shops before ending at the entrance of Gamla stan.
Toilets along Drottninggatan are mostly found in nearby cafés, shops, or subway stations. Some are free to use, others require a small fee.

Hötorget
Located just one street away from Drottninggatan, this is one of the most well-known squares in downtown Stockholm. It is a bustling open-air market filled with vibrant stalls selling fresh fruits, strawberries, and beautiful flowers.
I visited this place on a school trip once. One of my classmates proudly bought a “Gucci” cap. Let’s just say the only thing authentic about it was the regret.
Scammers are kind of like pigeons, you find them in almost every major city selling fake luxury products, especially at markets like this. It's a great place, just keep your eyes open!

Gamla Stan
Stockholm’s historic island features a charming maze of cobblestone alleys and medieval streets. It offers a mix of touristy souvenir shops alongside hidden gems like antique dealers, local art studios, and independent handicraft boutiques.
You might stumble upon Galleria Passagen. It was opened by King Oscar II in 1897, today it is Stockholms smallest but also oldest mall.
There are a few public toilets on this island, most require a small fee. You can also find toilets in cafes, restaurants and shops.
Shopping Centers
Gallerian
Just a ten-minute walk from the Central Station you find Gallerian, a large urban shopping center offering you over 50 stores, including popular international and Swedish brands for fashion, beauty, tech, even a large IKEA.
This shopping center contains an information desk, where you can receive tourist information, free maps, gift suggestions, and even free gift wrapping. Gallerian also provides tax-free shopping in many stores.
Clean and modern restrooms are located near IKEA on level 03. Facilities include accessible toilets, a family room with changing and nursing space, and a vending machine stocked with hygiene products. Access costs 15 SEK which is about 1 – 2 EUR/USD.

Westfield Mall of Scandinavia delivers a massive lineup of international flagship stores, cozy cafes for a quick fika, and a huge variety of sit-down restaurants, packed alongside high-energy entertainment like a VR arcade and Stockholm’s only IMAX movie theater.
There is plenty to do, and how you spend your time here is entirely up to you!
It is crowded
If you’re someone who doesn’t like crowds or loud places, seriously, don’t come here. I once had to duck into a restaurant just to avoid getting swept away by a stampede of shoppers. There’s sound coming from every direction; people walking, talking, eating, kids yelling, strollers squeaking. Honestly, it was kind of crazy. Still, it seems like the crowds don’t bother most people, since the place is always packed.

Toilets are free to use throughout the mall, and from what I’ve seen, they’re impressively clean and well-kept.
